Introduction

Most people like the beauty of singing bowls and enjoy listening to their pure, harmonious tones, but many people are unaware of the benefits of singing bowls.

People use singing bowls, also referred to as Himalayan or Tibetan singing bowls, for many different reasons including the following: to enhance their meditation, yoga and Reiki practice and sound baths; to relieve stress and to balance chakras. Before we begin discussing the different uses for singing bowls, we need to know more about the practice of sound therapy.

What Is Sound Therapy?

Sound therapy is the practice of using energy frequencies, or sound, to balance the body’s energy. Our bodies contain energy frequencies, and when there is an energy imbalance, sonic frequencies are used to reattune the energy. Tibetan singing bowls are one of the instruments used by sound therapists for both healing and relaxation.

Even physics can be used to validate the theory behind sound therapy. According to the law of physics, everything in our universe vibrates whether we hear it or not, each element resonating at a different rate.

When we are in good health, various body parts are vibrating at optimum frequency, but our energy systems are affected by stresses of life that alter our frequency to become out of tune. This altered state can manifest into disease.

Doctors Advocating for Sound Therapy

Dr. Deepak Chopra, a U.S. licensed physician and cofounder of The Chopra Center, is a strong advocate of sound therapy. Chopra believes that “The body is held together by sound; the presence of disease indicates that some sounds have gone out of balance.”

The medical director of the Deepak Chopra Center in California, Dr. David Simon, found that “the sounds from Tibetan Singing Bowls, as well as chanting, are chemically metabolized into ‘endogenous opiates,’ which act on the body as internal painkillers and healing agents.”

A former advocate of sound therapy was Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, the previous director of Medical Oncology at Weill-Cornell Medical College for Complementary and Integrative in New York City. Since the early 1990s, Dr. Gaynor had used sound therapy, including Tibetan singing bowls, when caring for his cancer patients. He believed that sound heals on a physical level because it transforms us emotionally and spiritually.

Sound Baths

Singing bowls are used during sound baths to help people relax and heal. During a sound bath, the participant lies down while a practitioner plays the singing bowl on or around the participant’s body.

During this therapy, a deep meditative state is induced by the waves of sound produced by the singing bowl(s). When surrounded by the vibrations of the singing bowl, the body relaxes and realigns its internal vibrations. It is this state of relaxation that triggers what Dr. Herbert Benson calls “the relaxation response,” which refers to the body’s ability to relax and heal.

Singing Bowls used as a Stress Reliever

Singing bowls can be used as a form of meditation to help you relax and improve your health, and Tibetan singing bowl meditation may be an excellent way to reduce tension, anxiety and depression.

“Listening to the high-intensity, low-frequency combination of singing bowls ... in a sound meditation could induce a deep relaxation response and positively affect mood and sense of well-being,” according to Dr. Tamara Goldsby and other researchers at the University of California San Diego.

Enhance Your Practice

Yoga and meditation

The pure, calming tones from singing bowls enable a deeper meditative state because they give our minds something else to concentrate on during meditation, whereas the sound waves simultaneously affect our bodies on a physical level. These sound waves change our brain waves and allow our body’s cells and muscles to release tension and relax.

Following the work of Nobel Prize winner Erwin Neher, Dr. Karen Brummel-Smith explains that the vibrating resonance of Tibetan singing bowls and

meditation have been correlated with enhancing alpha and theta brain waves, which induce tranquil and blissful states.

Yoga

In the same ways that Tibetan singing bowls are used to improve meditation, people use singing bowls during yoga. Singing bowls help people push through difficult postures during their yoga sessions, and it is common to begin or end a session with the singing bowl’s pure, harmonious tones.

Reiki

Many Reiki practitioners consider sound healing using singing bowls to complement their practice of channeling energy into a patient to effect positive results and healing. The sound and vibrations from singing bowls are used to aid in the healing process of a Reiki session.

Balance Your Chakras

The body’s chakras, shown in the image below, are energy points within the body through which our energetic balance can be restored. The body is formed by a network of channels through which flows the chi or vital energy; an imbalance of the flow of this energy can contribute to diseases and unhealthful symptoms in the body.

During a chakra balancing, singing bowls are placed directly on, or close to, the physical chakra points in the body. When the singing bowl is struck, it releases sound and vibrations into the energy point in the body and rebalances the energy.

By reintroducing the correct vibration into an area of the body, following an established vibration system through the study of Indian Vedic science of mantras, “you can begin to restore the memory of wholeness in that area,” writes Roger Gabriel, chief meditation officer at The Chopra Center.

It may be surprising to you to find that the Indian chakra system is very similar to the ways that Western doctors study the human body. For example, the location of each chakra has been compared with its equivalent organ within the endocrine system.

It is important to understand the similarities between the spiritual chakra system and Western psychoneuroendocrinology because a “deeper understanding of the links between mind, body and spirit, will benefit us all,” says Dr. Serena Roney-Dougal at the Psi Research Center in the UK.

Choosing a Singing Bowl

It’s important to ensure that any tool used for meditation and healing purposes is of high quality and will serve your body’s highest good.

The difference between a high-quality singing bowl and one that is priced cheap and mass produced is clear upon striking the bowl. The sound and vibration of a high-quality singing bowl will reverberate in a more powerful and sustained manner than other singing bowls.

At Rare Attain, all our singing bowls are handcrafted in the Nepalese foothills of the Himalayas. Each bowl is uniquely made and adorned with mantras, symbols and art to bring spiritual purpose to the use of the bowl.

How Do I Clean My Singing Bowl?

Dust, dirt and oils from your hands can collect on a singing bowl, damaging its finish and sunlight can also dull or tarnish the finish after an extended period of time, so your Tibetan singing bowl will need to be cleaned from time to time.

Fortunately it's pretty simple to keep your Tibetan singing bowl clean and in excellent condition. Store bought cleaners aren't appropriate for singing bowls. You'll want to use an all-natural cleaner.

There are only a few things you will need to cling your singing bowl:

  • 2 large bowls
  • 3 clean, soft cloths or small towels
  • 1/2 fresh lemon
  • warm water

Here are the steps for cleaning your Tibetan Singing Bowl:

  1. Fill a large bowl (like a salad mixing bowl) with warm water and squeeze the juice from a half a lemon into it.
  2. Take a second large bowl and fill it just with warm water.
  3. Use a clean, soft cloth and soak it in the lemon juice water. Then, wring out the excess water from it. Use that moist cloth to rub away any stained or dirty areas of your singing bowl.
  4. Use a second clean, soft cloth and dip it into the plain water bowl, wringing out the excess water. Use it to wipe the bowl and rid it of the citric acid from the lemon juice. It's extremely important to remove the lemon juice residue; otherwise, it could damage your bowl, so be sure to be very thorough.
  5. Use a third clean, soft cloth to thoroughly wipe your singing bowl dry. Be sure to remove all excess moisture, which could lead to corrosion, and buff the bowl to a clean, healthy shine!

REMINDER: DO NOT use any abrasive cleaners or store bought cleaners on your singing bowl. Many ingredients in household cleaners or even things like salt or baking soda could potentially damage your bowl.

Care for Singing Bowls

Is There Anything Else I Should Know About The Care Of My Singing Bowl?

Please remember that each singing bowl is a unique, handcrafted piece and that even the slightest dent or damage could affect its sound or make it completely unusable.

Help protect your bowl by always placing it on a singing bowl pillow or cushion and do not place it on the edge of a shelf or table, where it might easily be knocked to the floor

In addition, NEVER leave your singing bowl outside or expose it to prolonged direct sunlight. And, of course, if your singing bowl is ever exposed to water, make sure that you thoroughly dry and buff the bowl in order to keep the finish from tarnishing.

How Fast Will I Get My Singing Bowl?

Although all of our Tibetan singing bowls come from the Himalayan region, they are now in this country and ship within 24 hours. How quickly you get them depends on your proximity to our Utah location, but in most cases, you should get your singing bowl within a few days of ordering it.

Can I Choose The Color Of My Singing Bowl Pillow?
